While Burgundy winemaker Vin Noé’s Jonathan Purcell has been getting a good deal of attention over the last five years or so, we’re the odd ones out springing for his Gamay instead of the much more pedigreed (and expensive) white wines or Bourgogne rouge from fancier appellations. As a pure coincidence, Purcell lives in a village by name of Gamay, just outside of Saint-Aubin, and this bottling of Gamay is one of the wines for which he first received some praise; we think it’s pretty special, too. Very elegant and perfumed nose, with fine structure on the palate and no fear of real “red-wine-ness,” which is a feature by which many contemporary, cool-carbonic Gamays are dominated. ‘Amour Vache’ feels like a natural Burgundian winemaker’s touch with Gamay, with some spirit behind it, and we think it’s worth a close look if you’re a head for either Burgundy or Beaujolais.
