Slovakian winemaking, despite similarities to the winemaking culture of eastern Austria, might not be particularly well known, but the family behind Trnava’s Slobodné Vinárstvo is working hard to change that. Working a 17-hectare plot in the Danubian Lowlands they are crafting the kind of wines that have put eastern Europe at the very centre of the natural wine conversation. Majer, made from a blend of western and eastern grapes, is bright and complex, with notes of forest fruits, dried herbs and solid minerality.
