The Sidecar is perhaps the most famous of all cognac cocktails, with over a century of history behind it. The origins of the name are a little murky, but the popular telling is that the drink was invented around the end of World War I as an on-the-go beverage for a customer who would always turn up in the sidecar of a motorcycle! Sweet, tart, and luscious, this is a year-round cocktail that every aspiring bartender should have in their repetoire. Don't opt for cheap brandy as a substitution - rich and smooth cognac is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Ingredients:
1 ½ oz cognac
¾ oz orange liqueur
¾ oz lemon juice
Garnish: orange peel, sugared rim

Coat the rim of a coupe glass with sugar, if desired, and set aside. Combine ingredients in a shaker and shake with ice until well chilled. Double strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
