Podere Orto lies on Lazio’s high plains, or low mountains, at 600m of elevation, in an area called L’Alta Tuscia Viterbese, or simply Tuscia. It’s wedged between Italy’s center and south, at the meeting of subregions Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany. When the region of Chianti becomes too hot in the summer, this is a good place to come to cool off—it's also only 30 minutes from the sea. Podere Orto’s rosso has a similar red fruit and forest floor that reminds one of good Chianti, but there's so much more to it—dark iron, a strong vein of soil, notes of dried pine. It is such a beautiful rendition of Italian red wine, and there's no analog like it anywhere in the region of northern Lazio. Winemaker Giuliano Salesi makes magic—buy this, age it, decant it, drink it with care.
