Alsatian Riesling is highly regarded among somm-types and other unbearable connoisseurs who like big ol' white wines with compote textures and embarrassing amounts of residual sugar. The times they are a'changing, though! This experimental Riesling from Pierre Arnold is pulled from 30 year-old vines on granite and mica, spending over a year and a half on lees in a very large barrel (an old tradition in Alsace). It's still like the old-school whites from this area in some ways, with glossy, dense texture, but it pierces with a linear acidity. White peach, white flowers and preserved lemon shine through. For those open-minded folk who appreciate the old but want the liveliness of change, too.
