This is a profoundly special wine, farmed high in the Alps by the Mayr family, who own only 2.5 hectares, but whose ancestors have been farming vines in the exact same mountain spot since the late 1700's. It's derived from only 10 rows (!) of roughly 30 year-old vines of Teroldego, an uncommon mountain variety you'll only see in these high northern stretches of Italy/Austria (Bolzano is right on the border of the two). Fermented in stainless steel, aged in neutral barrels for around two years, followed by at least two more years in bottle, this wine is given ample time to achieve the complexity and grandeur of which it's capable. Black fruit, dark woodland berries and undergrowth, medium weight, with Alpine lift and a clear sense of the sun having ripened things deeply.
