NY Times wine critic Eric Asimov has written more than once that he has a thirst for Chianti that can’t be slaked; we love this attitude, as Chianti is a deeply un-hip region, mostly because it got itself into trouble in the 1980s and 90s by deliberately producing oceans of industrial stuff that has been quite anonymous. But Asimov is right! When you open this bottle from Montesecondo, a real, small farmer-producer, you’ll be newly introduced to the joys of properly made Sangiovese from this region of Tuscany: fresh air, delineated florals, perfectly red ripe cherry, thyme and oregano. It smells like a hillside with sunshine, which is sort of odd that something so ‘red’-flavored can do so. The great acidity and nice structure of Chianti is preserved here, but Montesecondo ferments in concrete, which preserves freshness and doesn’t add weight or tannins from wood. A very balanced wine, harmonious and just right.
