We’d love to see a renaissance of Chianti Classico after decades of the region churning out rather unserious, grocery-store level Sangioveses with medieval knights and flags on the labels: the region and its amazing terroir is capable of so much more. Winemaker Michael Schmelcer calls this cuvée ‘reverse gear’ in Italian, suggesting a return to Chianti’s old school flavors and less of the dumbing-down that's dominated the industrial wines of the appellation. That means this wine is medium+ bodied, with classic notes of ripe black cherries, some warm soil, and has pleasing tannic structure with decent acidity. A great way to introduce yourself to the zone if you’ve never before given this part of Tuscany a chance.
