Mas Mudigliza is the project of a young winemaker from Bordeaux who moved his small family to the beautiful Fenouillèdes mountain range and valley that runs the length of the Roussillon. (Mudigliza, the winery name, is a combination of syllables from each of the partners’ names, Muriel Samson and Dimitri Glipa.) On this stony terroir of the Fenouillèdes, mainly schist or granite marls, very special things are possible: this seriously underpriced, stoic and impressive red displays it well. A regionally characteristic blend of Grenache, Carignan, and a touch of Syrah, this wine shows deep black fruit, sweet spice, and smokiness from schist; having aged in large tanks and barrels for over a year before bottling lends depth. At 2020 red now, this stately wine is drinking beautifully, proof that the Roussillon of France doesn’t make only bistro-style easy natural wines, but neither just boring and polished big vanity wines, either.
