Half Syrah, half Carignan, both drawn from old vines in Mendocino county, cleverly fermented, aged, and blended by winemaker Pete Bloomberg of Llewelyn. Pete confesses, having fallen in love with Chardonnay (of all things), that 2023 was a turning point of sorts, for him: “Before this harvest, I’d more or less decided I wasn’t going to make much red wine anymore. But recently, after opening a bottle of this on my own, I thought, “dang, this is good; maybe I should keep making red wine.” This is about as direct a affirmation from a Californian down-to-earth, mechanical sort of fellow you’re going to get — plus our notes for the wine of bramble, stone, cassis and tar. It’s not hefty in weight, but rather persistent, mid-weight, fresh and spiced both: enough to compel you to try this special northern Cali thing.
