Being folks who are quite interested in Catalonia, both the better-known Spanish heart of it and also the French-Pyrenees part of it too, we’ve pursued tasting many versions of Grenache Gris over the years. It’s red Grenache and white Grenache’s little-known pink-skinned sibling (like Pinot Gris), and it’s a common feature of older vineyards in Catalonia and the coastal parts of the Languedoc to have all three varieties planted together or near each other. Single bottlings of Grenache Gris are hard to come by, though, and along with Cellar Frisach’s “Alifares” and Clos du Rouge Gorge’s “L’Ubac,” this might be one of the finest examples we’ve ever seen: there’s depth and structure here, with notes of mandarin, salt, stone, and delicate flowers. Rosy in hue, with serious beauty and superlative handling of the variety’s skins. Don’t miss it.
