Le Grappin is Emma and Andrew Nielsen, English and Aussie ex-pats in Burgundy, who focus on making single-vineyard, intense expressions of the vineyard parcels from which they have the good fortune to buy fruit. This bottling, from a vineyard called 'Les Seurrets,' is an old-vines parcel resting on the plain just below the village of Pommard, a village famous for its renderings of Pinot Noir with structure and a certain darkness underneath their fruit. This bottling is no exception: dolomitic marl over a coarse limestone bed makes these plants give slightly darker and mysterious tones, not just flowers and fruit. (This is a red Burgundy for the wicked stepmother type, not the fancy princess kind also available in different pockets of this region.) The Nielsens are careful winemakers, and their wines are really transparent. A beauty.
