This is a special single-parcel white from the exceptionally talented southern Rhône vigneron Nicolas Renaud. In 2011, Renaud planted a field blend vineyard, via selection massale, of Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Picardan, Picpoul, Clairette and Ugni Blanc. It’s like a photograph testifying to nearly-forgotten southern Rhône and Mediterranean white varieties in France. The resulting wine, an artifact of sun and sea, has a nose with delicate fennel and pretty herb notes, but the palate is delightful contrast, with body, substance, and a seriously stick-to-your-teeth salty finish. Demands a plate of raw shellfish by the sea, or, if you can’t get that in the dead of winter, a linguine with clams. Garnish with fennel fronds for ultimate sensory crossover.
