We're excited about this new bottling from vigneron at Le Clos de Grillons Nicolas Renaud: 100% Cinsault, a southern French variety we think doesn't get nearly enough attention; in this case from vines planted on famed southern Rhône pebbles in Renaud's village of Rochefort-du-Gard. Ferment utilizes about a week's worth of carbonic maceration, without additives, filtration or added sulfites. The nose is immediately intriguing: bright raspberry color, notes of crushed red berries, a very pretty floral thread running through it. On the palate, it is a vibrant, invigorating wine, carried by a salinity that almost sparkles on the finish. A light, natural, sort of uninhibited wine: think impressionism, Cézanne in pinks and reds, bike baskets, long walks in good-smelling parks.
