Gavi is one of those places in Italian wine that a lot of people might have heard of but not actually know that it’s a place, not just a ‘type’ of wine. In this case, Gavi is an appellation in the southeastern part of the Piedmont, quite close to the border of Liguria, where some of Italy’s most interesting, herby, and delicious white wines hail. This bottling from La Raia is a nice introduction to the grape variety that is always used in Gavi, called Cortese, with zingy, fresh, bright herbal and citrus notes, along with a nice persistence on the palate. If you’ve got an aunt who’s a Sauvignon Blanc person or who insists on only Provençale rosé all year round, this Cortese / Gavi is a great way to expand your view while staying in the fresh lawn and seaside sort of mental state.
