Galicia is in the northwestern corner of Spain, north of Portugal; it’s perhaps the wine region in the country most impacted by the Atlantic - green, verdant, hilly, with terraces, rivers, and ample rainfall. The region has been undergoing a revitalization in recent years, and natural producer Nacho Gonzalez of La Perdida is one of the primary examples of ambitious and striking wines that speak very much of their place. This bottling called ‘Latexo’ is a particular wine from Gonzalez, not to be repeated again: 50% Garnacha Tintorera, coming from one of his oldest estate vineyards, blended with 50% Caiño Tinto from a winegrower friend, Antonio Pertela in Pontevedra. Short maceration, six months of rest in tank, no additions at all, and a startling rendition of two of Galicia’s most interesting native red varieties.
