Perhaps the most 'serious' wine to emerge from the Saint Georges sur Layon couple Hervé and Marie of La Grange de Noue Méa, 'Le Patriste' is a Cabernet Franc fashioned in a more 'autumnal' way, with nearly two years of aging in neutral oak barrels, never being topped up, and two further years of aging in bottle before release. Far from being a Big Boy Bordeaux style Cab Franc, however, this wine's nose opens with a bouquet of floral and dried spices, with notes of red and pale fruit. On the palate, it is structured, and lightly tannic, with a satisfying and mineral length. A great example of how sometimes even cheeky, simple-seeming French labels can hide natural wines of real depth and complexity, while also maintaining energy!
