Old-vines Gamay in a region where Syrah dominates, 'La Souteronne' is the only label from Rhône Valley icon Hervé Souhaut that focuses on the variety. These are 50 to 80 year-old parcels on pure granite soils; the wine is a blend of grapes from eight sites, or four hectares in total, in the Vallée du Doux, all estate-owned. This wine is always amazing to us, though we prefer it with some years in bottle, but overall it is a kaleidoscopic Gamay, not at all like those from the Rhone's northern neighbors. 'La Souteronne' has alternating moments of strawberry, black cherry, plum, Fig Newtons, smoky rosemary, and pulverized stone.
