Roughly 70% of the German wine region Württemberg is planted to red grape varieties—it’s a zone more commonly known for the light-bodied Trollinger and overblown Swabian Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir. But when you taste a genuinely well-made, natural version of the white wines from this region, you really question this historical decision—Dolde’s village-level Riesling from their home village of Neuffen is such a standout and a steal for the money: terrific citrus notes like lime zest, great definition on the palate, a sense of medium body but with lots of sharp edges. The soil type here is referenced on the label: “Weißer Jura,” which are white Jurassic, calcareous marl soils—the stuff that makes the actual Jura’s white wines famous. Try this lean, pristine version of Riesling and you’ll see what the potential of this southern German region really is.
