We've been really excited by seeing Guttarolo's work in Puglia evolve over the last few years: moving away from the heavy, dark Primitivi that most people recognize from this part of the world, and into wines that are a touch more open and experimental. Here, the Pugliese variety Verdeca, which is almost never seen in the States, is aged on the skins and fermented and raised in clay amphora. It's a wild ride of tropical fruit, salty sea notes, a bit of earthen seaweed, and dried pear rinds. A fascinating Mediterranean white wine that doesn't have easy comparisons elsewhere in the wine world!
