Foradori, now a second-generation organic winery begun in the 1980’s in the Dolomites, is probably the best-known producer of Teroldego in Italy, which, if you don’t know Teroldego or this winery, might not be saying anything at all. It’s a northern, mountainous red grape variety with a black alpine character - genetically related to varieties as diverse as Syrah, Lagrein, Marzemino, and even probably Pinot Noir. If you can think of a slightly less masculine and more mountainous Syrah, it gets you close; soil, blackberries, black plum types of notes, perhaps with a twinge of nice cigarette reminding you that it’s a night creature, not a stroll on the Amalfi coast. Good acidity, moderate tannin, Teroldego really can be coaxed into nice things if only a serious producer in Trentino were to take care of it, and that’s exactly what the Foradori family has done.
