James Jelks, winemaker and proprietor of Florèz, has made both intriguing and unfussy artisanal wines in his home base of Santa Cruz since 2017. He describes his production ethos as “dedicated to elemental practices,” which is about the most Cali-sounding thing you could say, and mostly translates to his preference for working with organically farmed vineyards and partners, when he’s not doing the farming himself, as well as focusing on spontaneous ferments and analog styles of winemaking. The ‘Star Drops’ Chardonnay, from the foresty, magical Santa Cruz Mountains, is a welcome change from the Sonoma-Cutrer sickness of buttery big boys. The wine is textural, yes, but also brisk and lively with acidity. There’s nice notes of lemon curd, yellow apple, and pleasing meadow stuff like hay. We really dig James’ work and appreciate all of his wines’ easy-going but harmonious sort of way.
