Perhaps there’s nothing immediately sexy or evocative in thinking about rosé from Long Island—it might more easily bring to mind, say, tourist buses or Instagram photo shoots in terribly farmed vineyards. Erik Longabardi and Benford Lepley, the producers behind Floral Terranes, are the opposite of this: thoughtful, scrappy, and absolutely dedicated to making artisanal and beautiful things from Long Island that defy stereotype. This Merlot was sourced from an organically farmed vineyard in Mattituck, NY, on the North Fork. It was whole-cluster direct-pressed for light extraction in order to make it rosé, then barrel fermented. It’s somewhere between gulpable and magical, with a forest-berry, red Smuckers jam quality, despite the wine being fully dry on the palate. Some of NY’s finest.
