Xarel.lo (sha-RELL-oh) is Catalonia's finest white variety; it is a pithy, salty analogue to Chardonnay in France; in the Penedès it's frequently grown on rocky, calcareous soils, not far off from the limestone of Chablis. Our comrade Ruben Parera's top bottling of this fine white grape is stirring: elegant, layered, deeply fresh, with lots of both body and citrus rind to keep things interesting. One of our favorite and perhaps one of the grandest white wines in the shop, and a tribute to how this grape variety can age when handled seriously.
