It can be hard to find Tuscan red wines that aren’t just processed, sort of basic red wines, as the region has become something of an industrial center for anonymous Sangiovese. This is a huge shame, as the terroir cries out for serious, personal iterations of one of Italy’s most delicious, complex grape varieties. This bottling, ‘Bulgarelli,’ made by winemaker and proprietor of Ficomontanino, Maria Sole Gianelli, is a straightforward, honest, and pleasingly aromatic version, coming from her family’s estate in the southeastern-most part of Tuscany, super close to the borders of Lazio and Umbria. Mid-weight, black cherry fruit, garrigue, reminders of olive trees and houses built of stone.
