Els Jelipins is a culty, little-known winery operating in the foothills of Font-Rubí in the Penedès. Former agricultural engineer Gloria Garriga changed her life in the early 2000's when she was horrified at the state of 'extreme' industrial viticulture dominating the surrounding landscape, and a desire to do something small, 'spartan,' agricultural, and aesthetic led her and her husband to found this tiny winery. (Now Gloria and her daughter Berta make the wines together). The rosé, 'rosat' in Catalan, from this winery is based on the hard-to-farm native variety Sumoll, with about 30% Macabeu blended in for a bit of flowers and lift - a touch on the bolder side, this rosé is as serious as those iconic structured ones of Bandol or the great Cerasuolos of Abruzzo; it needs hours in the decanter, but it will reward you handily with rose, tomato, pink flowers, spice. Truly magical and near-impossible to find.
