Els Jelipins is a culty, little-known winery operating in the foothills of Font-Rubí in the Penedès. Former agricultural engineer Gloria Garriga changed her life in the early 2000's when she was horrified at the state of 'extreme' industrial viticulture dominating the surrounding landscape, and a desire to do something small, 'spartan,' agricultural, and aesthetic led her and her husband to found this tiny winery. (Now Gloria and her daughter Berta make the wines together). The top wine at the winery, of only three or four cuvées maximum, the 'negre,' simply called 'red,' is made of 100% Sumoll, a challenging native Catalan red variety that nearly disappeared 80 years ago. Deep, with maraschino cherry, wild scrub herbs, pink peppercorn, and flowers... A mysterious natural wine and an iconic one for those who's encountered it before. Near-impossible to find!
