Irouléguy is perhaps one of France’s most obscure appellations, being down in the Sudouest where hardly anyone travels, and this is really a huge shame. There’s a wildness still in this part of France, and the wines, when made well, can display both a rugged character but also a deep vitality that hasn’t been bridled and turned aristocratic—in other words, this is a French red as far away from the refinements of Pinot Noir as you could possibly get, without being “weird” or freaky. Tannat, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon blend to make a silky, black-fruited palate with a full body that retains a touch of acidity for balance; herby notes like lemon verbena, chamomile, or cardamom lend elements of surprise. Pair with cowboy meals and purple sunsets.
