Clos des Capucins is the winery project in Chinon of former wine journalist and author turned vigneronne Fiona Beeston. She began this winemaking work in 2011, which was the rehabilitation of this old Chinon property, a fallow, 1.3-hectare actual ‘clos’ site of old vines of Cabernet Franc which needed a caretaker. Beeston’s talent and familiarity with the great wines of the Loire is so clear: this structured, long-lived Chinon is about as real, deep, and true as one could hope for from this appellation. Biodynamic farming, horse plowing, natural ferments, and long élevage in fine old wood all come together to communicate energy and soul in this dark, deeply red-fruited wine. Clos des Capucins produces less than 4000 bottles per year of exactly two cuvées, and we’re lucky to have stumbled across this fine and rare work.
