Capitán Fanegas is the personal label of Mario Ruiz Clavijo, coming from within his family’s larger winery: Bodegas Marques de Arviza. This charming, village-style wine shows saturated red and black fruits from Tempranillo, combined with the lifted floral and herbal notes coming from the less-often seen, but still traditional, Graciano variety. Oak barrel aging for around a year and change, but it doesn’t make your teeth feel fuzzy with imbalanced wood—just gives that velvety quality and warmth that a lot of folks go looking for in Rioja. A steal for the price.
