Navarra in Spain can be a tricky region in which to make wine due to heat and dryness; Azul y Garanza in fact is based in Carcastillo, with vines in the Bardenas Reales desert. But we shouldn’t strike out desert wines just on principle; this beautiful Garnacha Blanca was drawn from an old single vineyard that the trio of winemakers Maria, Dani, and Fernando recuperated and started treating with plantings of other flora in order to promote biodiversity. The results are wonderful: two weeks of skin contact, eight months in clay amphoras, it’s a refined, stone-fruit packed, excellent vision of an “orange” wine.
