Instead, this wine is sourced from a collection of white-variety vineyards planted on granite in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, with most vines aged between 25 and 70 years. These parcels boast a wide array of indigenous grape varieties, with a predominant grapes being Encruzado and Bical, complemented by over a dozen others such as Malvasia Fina and Cerceal. The granitic soils and varying altitudes contribute to the wine’s distinctive minerality and freshness; fermentation and élevage in a split of neutral oak and stainless steel ensures balance. What you shouldn’t miss is how majestic an example of Atlantic coast white wine this is, speaking to the insanely hard work António Madeira has done to restore tons of ancient tiny parcels of native vines here; banish the thought of Vinho Verde and its cheap, tourist-oriented gulpability. Madeira’s is a salty, regal white that rivals the powerful structures of northern French appellations like Chablis or Sancerre, but the wine demands little fried sardines and olives, not rich gooey cheese and snails with butter.
