This wine from northern Italian natural wine pioneer Angiolino Maule of La Biancara is a great intro to the notion that in the Veneto there's a terrific tradition of the Bordelaise red varieties and that here, they're not just global transplants. Both Merlot and Cabernet can accomplish really lovely things in northwestern Italy, but the Veneto and Friuli are the subregions where they genuinely shine. This rosso is a blend of the two varieties, fermented with a longer maceration, then rested in stainless steel, with no additions made. It's dark-fruited, medium+ bodied, supple and refreshing at once. Great dinner wine.
