Alphonse Mellot is one of the greater domaines currently working in the over-hyped appellation of Sancerre, with roots going all the way back to the 15th century. Thankfully, we still have examples like Mellot producing genuinely elegant, textbook examples of the greatness that Sauvignon Blanc can achieve in this special place. The domaine’s biodynamic farming also helps this goal; one can feel actual energy and life in these wines. ‘La Demoiselle’ is a mid-tier bottling from this winery; it’s pitched between the flinty characteristics of the terroir and a giving, round touch on the palate from judiciously used oak, but a sense of drive keeps the thing energetic, too. Really fine work for those looking for a classy and classic French white wine.
