Villa Picta's 'Melampo’ is a wine of balance, one with the idea to blend three varieties found in this crossroads region of Lombardy, but not usually put together: Pinot Bianco lends a fruit base, Garganega sapidity and structure, and Malvasia a bit of ‘allegro,’ or aromatics. Here, the Pinot Bianco is vinified separately, as the harvest of this variety is earlier, and the Garganega and Malvasia are cofermented; all are done direct press in a vertical basket press, then rested in steel tanks. After settling in winter, the lots are blended; at bottling in spring, fresh juice/must is added to create bubbles (the traditional Italian rifermentato method). A joyful wine, with great acidity, herbal notes, a sense of delicate sunshine, and easy lift on the palate. 'Melampo' is the name of an old guard dog found in the original telling of Pinocchio, a companion to the protagonist (in this case, that would be Villa Picta's Lambrusco!).
