Folk Notes: Scar of the Sea

Folk Notes: Scar of the Sea

Scar of the Sea, located in San Luis Obispo, California was founded in 2012 and is owned and run by Mikey and Gina Giugni, who also own Lady of the Sunshine. Influenced by the ocean, their wines and ciders showcase the beautiful maritime terroir of the Central Coast of California.

Based in San Luis Obispo, California, Mikey & Gina Giugni make some of the Central Coast's most elegant, site-driven Pinot Noirs. This bottling is a blend of three different vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, all picked at different times based on fruit acidity and flavor. This wine has dusty red fruit, medium weight, and beautiful aromatics coming from partial whole-cluster ferment and restrained use of sulfut. A great example of oceanic Cali Pinot.

Scar of the Sea is made up of ten different vineyards and works with many local farmers each highlighting the land and farmers' approach through sustainable and organic farming practices and as little intervention in the cellar as possible. The two grapes the winery mainly works with are pinot noir and chardonnay.

California Chardonnay can be something of an industrial monolith; so many of them all taste exactly the same. It's why we love Mikey Giugni from Scar of the Sea's versions: they have the sunshine-y, forward fruit of the West Coast, but a soft touch and a lot of breath in tham, like the more subtle, mineral versions from France. Mikey's Bassi Vineyard Chardo is just so pleasurable: medium weight, coastal, pretty and balanced.
