Folk Notes: Paulette Maziou of Petite Nature | Women in Wine

In the village of Quintenas in northern Ardèche, Pauline "Paulette" Maziou crafts exceptional wines in a small cellar beneath her home. A native of the region, she left her media career in 2019 to return to her roots and establish Petite Nature, beginning with just half a hectare of vines and producing around 2,000 bottles.

The northern Ardèche offers a compelling terroir for viticulture. Though historically overshadowed by its prestigious neighbor across the Rhône, this area has emerged as an exciting source of distinctive wines with remarkable character. In her modest cellar—equipped with tanks, barrels, and manual winemaking tools—Pauline follows a zero-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentations, no filtration, and no additives whatsoever. She patiently allows her wines to develop naturally before bottling.

While her production has gradually increased, Pauline remains committed to small-scale winemaking. She's developing an agroforestry project on her property where she's planted vines interspersed with saplings, and she farms additional rented parcels using organic methods complemented by biodynamic practices.

Pauline's winemaking education combines formal training with practical experience alongside Northern Rhône vintners Jean Delobre (La Ferme des Sept Lunes) and Daniel Sage. While she's developed her own distinctive style, her use of techniques like Sage's 'trempette' method reflects these formative influences.  This method—literally meaning "dip" in French—involves briefly infusing whole grape bunches in the juice from direct pressing.

Petite Nature wines stand out for their purity and elegance. Distinctive and full of life, like Pauline herself. Wines not to be missed!
