Sylvain Martinez is a quiet dude, and despite the fact that he's been attending and pouring at France's most important, 20 year-old natural wine fair Le Dive Bouteille every year it's been held, he has somehow managed to avoid becoming particularly famous whether in France or here in the US. This is great news for us, because it means we are able to obtain genuine wines that have zero hype but all the actual pedigree of someone who's been making natural wines in the Loire for over two decades. This is Martinez' top bottling in his range, a Chenin Blanc from massale-selection vines planted in 2018, on clay-limestone soils, with older vines from the highest part of the parcel planted on ocean marl / oyster-fossil soils, too. Direct press, with fermentation started slowly in tanks before the wine was moved to barrels halfway through, then aged for two years in foudres. Striking minerality and a skeleton laced with salt are the wine's defining features, hung with golden yellow fruit that loudly notes, THIS IS WHAT GREAT CHENIN TASTES LIKE. A don't-miss.
