In a region as famous, expensive, and frankly, often over-hyped as Barolo, it is rare to find a young or new producer with the intelligence and also access to land who actually fashions wines worth noting. This is among the most staid and uptight of Italian wine regions - a thing you can’t say about almost any other part of Italy - but tiny agricoltore Cristian Boffa defies this norm. His wines are traditional, yes, but they also have feeling, something most producers snuff out by handling wines too much; Boffa is the antidote. That said, ‘Capalot’ is perhaps his most intense bottling: ripe cherry, spice, leather and coffee. If you like your Nebbiolo honest but still with some heft, this is the bottle for you.
