It’s hard to believe this, but this most fruit-forward of Roberto Henriquez’ bottlings of País comes from 200 year-old vines. There just aren’t that many places in the world with vineyards of this kind of resistance and patrimony, and Henriquez is one of the natural winemakers to have them and tend them with serious skill and care. With this wine we’re on the edge of the Bio-Bío River in Chile, and as such these are alluvial soils in a slightly warmer pocket, so even though the vines are miraculously old, Henriquez chooses to make this site into a lighter or friendly cuvée, though it still has some tannins; he says it’s his best wine to pair with asado. Notes of redcurrants, ferrous soils, sweet trees and menthol. Just very special.
