Lorella Reale and Piero Riccardi biodynamically farm six hectares of vines in between the small Lazio towns of Olevano Romano and Bellegra, not too far from Rome. In their 'collepazzo,' or 'crazy hills,' at 300 to 600m above sea level, they have two special soil types: rich, red volcanic earth and white sand/sandstone. The duo works expressly with the historical grape Cesanese here, separating out soil types to end up with three different bottlings of the variety. 'Collepazzo Reserva' is a special wine they only make in excellent years—Lorella claims 2015 was the best vintage in a decade; the wine spent two years in large chestnut barrels. Only 600 bottles produced.
