Annamária Török & Attila Francisti, of the label Kolonia 52, are to us some of the most interesting new and young producers to emerge in Hungary in the recent years. They cut their teeth at other important Austrian natural producers, working at places like Heinrich, Michl Gindl, and Gut Oggau; now the duo are busy exploring vineyards on various different kinds of exposition around the hill of St. George, or Szent György-hegy, on the Lake Balaton. This is the most serious red wine Kolonia 52 produces, 100% Kekfrankos, alias Blaufränkisch, fermented whole cluster, with about 50% being foot-crushed, then pressed off and fermented in a big old oak barrel. Deep, pensive, with blue and purple fruit, spices, forest floor. A testament to how interesting Central European terroir can be, and how majestic Blaufränkisch when it’s expressed by great farmers and vintners.
