Basic facts of this hard-to-pronounce red wine: Sezkszárd is the region (say 'Seks-ahrd'), Kadarka is the variety ('Ka-dark-ah'). The grape is endemic to Hungary; it found its way to this region because Balkan pepole, being pushed northward by the Turks in the 14th - 16th centuries, brought this variety with them to southwestern Hungary. Swabians settled the region in more recent centuries, bringing winemaking prowess with them, too, which leads to a noble history for this grape and this region, influenced by many peoples. Kadarka is light-bodied and pretty, with incensey notes and some soil components as well. Fans of Jura Poulsard, take note.
