San Bartolo Coyotepec is a Zapotec town in Oaxaca, Mexico known for its black pottery. Originally, the local clay’s prominent finish was grey. In the 1950’s that changed with the introduction of burnishing the clay by renowned potter Doña Rosa. The technique turned the grey matte clay into a shiny rich black clay, which until today is what the town is known for.

Hand wash and air dry only. Do not soak in water for a prolonged time, do not microwave, avoid use of sharp utensils as the unglazed surface will scratch and if not cleaned immediately, grease and colored foods may stain the surface. It is normal for clay to sweat at the beginning, if this happens, cure the piece by submerging it for 24 hours in saltwater.
