Food for the Folk - Folkways

Food for the Folk

In keeping with our mission to promote thoughtful and sustainable producers to the local community, Folkways is thrilled to present “Food for the Folk”. Starting June 8, 2022 Folkways will act as a pickup location for three stellar local purveyors with a focus on fine, organic and eco-conscious production.

With Deep Roots Farm we are offering a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture program). You may choose from a full share or half share of produce, with options to add on flowers and ferments. Signups for shares in the 23-week CSA can be made directly on deeprootsfarmny.com and close on June 5th. Members can pick up their produce (and have a taste of a featured wine) in the store at Folkways each week starting on Wednesday, June 8th from 4-7pm through the end of October.

Deep Roots Farm grows over a hundred varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs, and also have both cut flowers and ferments on offer. Set amidst the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in Copake, NY, wife and husband team Stormie and Scott O’Rourke are committed to organic, ethical and sustainable farming practices.

We are excited to host Idyllwild Bread for also pickups on Wednesdays from 4-7pm. To order please place your bread requests directly on Idyllwild Bread each week by Sunday. Your bread will be ready for pickup at Folkways on Wednesdays. Orders are limited.

We met Beth after tasting her delectable bread and learning that she’s also a Bay Area native. We shared stories of our memories from childhood of malted chocolate ice cream and sourdough. Through our shared love of bread and wine we thought to team up and bring it to you all folk.

Beth describes her practice:
“Idyllwild Bread is our response to a communal and deeply rooted need for whole, nutritious, delectable, naturally leavened bread. In order to serve our community the best sourdough possible, we prioritize harmony – time, temperature and atmosphere that is attuned to the seasons – and quality, which includes a return to centuries old baking traditions beloved for their simplicity and depth of attention.

Idyllwild Bread honors the ancient ritual of connecting our land to our food. We promote this collective vision of non-industrialized food with our fragrant, rustic, handmade sourdough bread. Our deepest wish is to share our love of restoring bread-making to its original proper practice with those of you who hunger for it.”

Lastly, Chaseholm Farm can now be ordered and picked up in Northern Westchester at Folkways Wines in Croton Falls. The first of the monthly pickup series will be on Tuesday June 21st 5-6:30pm. To celebrate we are having a Cheese & Wine tasting. Please join us!

Chaseholm offers a range of organic dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt, plus grass-fed beef and whey-fed pork along with an array of other goods! Please place your orders directly on Chaseholm Farms website.

Chaseholm is a dairy farm built upon principles of sustainable agriculture. The farm is certified organic and 100% grass fed since 2017, not only as a way to create delicious cheeses but also to promote the practice of regenerative agriculture by never using any synthetic fertilizer, herbicides, or pesticides and instead allowing the natural ecology of the farmscape to take center stage.
