In 1973, winemaker Lore Olds planted his organically-farmed 14 acres in red volcanic soil at 2100 ft, making Sky the highest vineyard on Mount Veeder. The winery runs on a single solar panel powering a single light bulb, and in the cellar things are just as stripped down: grapes are pressed with an old wooden basket press, punched down by hand, aged in old oak, bottled by hand. This is the opposite of the valley floor, new-wood, massive red wines that have come to dominate Napa. Lifted Zinfandel, with beautiful dark fruit and a purity of expression. Old Man on the Mountain Wine; there's nothing else like it.
