Modrý Portugal is the Czech name for a grape known in Germany and Austria as Blauer Portugieser. Portugieser (POR-tchoo-geezer) is a naturally low-alcohol, high-acid variety, and it flourishes in cooler climates—it's like an herbal, slightly spiced version of Pinot Noir, with blacker fruit, but the same pleasurable light and refined qualities. If you like Piedmontese reds but wish they weren't so ripe and grippy in tannic structure, Portugieser is the grape for you. We love Osička's traditional but refreshing version from Velké Bílovice, near the Slovakian border.
