Johannes Zillinger Grüner Veltliner 'Reflexion' 2018
Zillinger's Grüner Veltliner will redefine what this grape variety means to you: far from being the zippy, lean, Sauvignon-Blanc like iterations, this is a Grüner from one of Zillinger's best vineyard sites in his domaine, plus it undergoes long and slow ferment on lees. This translates to depth and body; white fruit, pears, spice, and minerality are other hallmarks. It's a complex wine that can stretch its legs and be open for an hour or two before drinking.
Domaine de la Réaltière Provence 'Blanc Public' 2020
This Provençale white wine is proof that the oceans of pale pink wine that emerge from this region aren't the real story of the southeastern part of France in any way. Pierre Michelland offers us a medium-to-full-bodied, joyful and herbal white from native Provençale varieties Ugni Blanc, Clairette, and the rare Araignan. It should be had with shellfish and linguine and capers on a picnic table outside.
Enderle & Moll Pinot Noir 'Basis' 2019
One of the cultiest domaines in Germany for the production of red wines, duo Enderle & Moll cultivate this Pinot Noir as the entry-level bottling of the many they produce. Based on soils of sandstone and shell limestone, this Pinot is better by far than most Burgundy at this price: ethereal, layered, textural, and not ruined by over-ripeness or new oak. A heartbreaker.
Scar of the Sea Pinot Noir 'Vino de los Ranchos' 2020
Based in San Luis Obispo, California, Mikey & Gina Giugni make some of the Central Coast's most elegant, site-driven Pinot Noirs. This bottling is a blend of three different vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, all picked at different times based on fruit acidity and flavor. This wine has dusty red fruit, medium weight, and beautiful aromatics coming from partial whole-cluster ferment and restrained use of sulfur. A great example of oceanic Cali Pinot.
Les Athlètes du Vin Grolleau 2020
This is a great bottle to introduce you to one of the charming underdog varieties of the Loire Valley, Grolleau. It's a native red grape that often smells of brambly fruit, underbrush, farms, and soil. This version from the collective Athlètes du Vin is medium-to-light-bodied and undergoes carbonic maceration: fruited, herby, weightless.
Château Guilhem Rouge 'Pot de Vin' 2020
A light-to-medium-bodied, country-styled Merlot; fermented in concrete for freshness, with native yeast ferment and low additions of sulfur making this an ideal French bistro wine. Honest, pleasurable, easy to drink.
